Stand in the driveway after a finished roof and the homeowner sees shingles. That's it. The drip edge tucked at the edges, the starter course under the first row, the ice & water membrane sealed to the deck — all invisible, all critical, and all suspiciously absent from a remarkable number of carrier estimates.

For roofers, these three components share a profile: cheap relative to the roof, required by code or manufacturer on most jobs, decisive for how the roof actually performs — and chronically "forgotten" by whoever wrote the scope first. Which means knowing the actual requirements, chapter and verse, is a revenue skill.

Here's the working guide to the invisible three: what the code says, how each installs, and how to get each one into the estimate and keep it there.

(Code references below are to the International Residential Code. Adoption varies — states amend, and at least one deletes the drip edge section outright — so the last word is always your locally adopted code. More on why that matters below.)


Drip Edge: The Code Section Every Roofer Should Know by Number

If you memorize one code citation, make it IRC R905.2.8.5. It's short, specific, and settles arguments:

  • A drip edge is required at eaves and rake edges of shingle roofs
  • Adjacent segments overlap at least 2 inches
  • The metal extends at least 1/4 inch below the roof sheathing and at least 2 inches back onto the deck
  • Mechanically fastened at no more than 12 inches on center
  • Sequencing: underlayment goes over the drip edge at eaves; drip edge goes over the underlayment at rakes

That sequencing detail is worth underlining, because it's the part inspectors check and DIY-adjacent installs botch. At the eave, water sheeting down the underlayment must land on metal — so metal goes down first. At the rake, wind-driven rain must not slip under the edge — so metal caps the underlayment. Different water problem, different order.

Why it matters on claims: drip edge has been in the model code since the 2012 IRC. On a tear-off in most jurisdictions, it's not an upgrade or a preference — it's a code-required component of the new roof, whether or not the old roof had it. That's the basis for including it every time, and for supplementing it when the carrier scope arrives without it.

The local-adoption asterisk: "most jurisdictions" is doing real work in that sentence. States amend the IRC freely — some add exceptions (Oklahoma allows a shingle-mold alternative), and Minnesota deletes the drip edge section entirely. Before you cite code in a supplement, confirm what your state actually adopted. Citing a section your jurisdiction struck is how a good argument becomes a credibility problem.

Ice & Water Shield: Geography Decides

The ice barrier requirement — IRC R905.1.2 — is conditional, and the condition is climate:

  • Where required: areas with a history of ice forming along the eaves causing water backup, as designated in the code's climate table for your jurisdiction. Cold-climate states in; warm-climate states generally out.
  • What qualifies: either two layers of underlayment cemented together, or (what everyone actually uses) a self-adhering polymer-modified bitumen sheet — the peel-and-stick membrane.
  • Coverage: from the lowest edge of the roof to a point at least 24 inches inside the exterior wall line of the building — measured horizontally, inside the heated envelope. On deep-overhang designs that's more membrane than people eyeball.
  • Steeper roofs: earlier code editions added a provision extending coverage at least 36 inches up-slope on 8/12-and-steeper roofs; the 2024 edition revised this area. Another verify-your-edition item.
  • The exception: detached accessory structures without conditioned floor area — the unheated detached garage genuinely may not need it.

Beyond the eave requirement, valleys carry their own logic: self-adhering membrane is a permitted valley lining under the asphalt shingle flashing provisions, which is why "ice & water in the valleys" is standard practice even in markets with no eave ice barrier requirement at all.

Estimate-side, remember the units trap: ice & water is measured in square feet, not squares — the classic 100x error in both directions.

Starter Strip: Code-Required Through the Back Door

Here's the one that surprises people: search the IRC for "starter strip" and you won't find a dedicated section. So carriers sometimes treat it as optional. It isn't — and the argument is better than a dedicated section, because it comes in two layers:

Layer one: the code's manufacturer-instructions provision. The IRC requires roof coverings to be installed in accordance with the manufacturer's installation instructions (the R905 general provisions). Every major shingle manufacturer's instructions require a starter course at the eaves — most also specify rakes for wind performance. Code requires following the instructions; the instructions require starter. Therefore starter is code-enforceable. That syllogism belongs in your supplement notes verbatim.

Layer two: the warranty argument. Wind warranties on major shingle lines are conditioned on proper installation — including starter (and often specifically the manufacturer's matching starter product, not field-cut tabs). An estimate that omits starter is an estimate for a roof with a voided wind warranty. Carriers understand that sentence.

Functionally, starter does two jobs: seals the first course against wind uplift at the roof's most vulnerable edge, and covers the cutouts and joints of the first visible row. Cut-up 3-tabs flipped backwards don't reliably do either on modern laminate systems — the sealant strip lands in the wrong place. Manufacturer starter, per instructions, every time.


Getting the Invisible Three Into Every Estimate

Knowing the requirements is half the job; the system is the other half. Three habits:

  1. Carry them by default. All three components belong permanently in your base roofing macros — present on every estimate unless a specific roof genuinely doesn't need one (a warm-climate eave barrier, for instance). Deleting beats remembering, which is why they anchor our list of items that vanish from memory-built scopes. A complete macro library ships with all three baked into every scope.
  2. Document like an inspector. Photos of the eave edge, rake edge, and valley conditions on every inspection; note the presence, absence, and condition of existing drip edge specifically. On the supplement, pair each item with its basis: code section (as locally adopted), manufacturer instruction, or both.
  3. Know your local text cold. Pull your state's adopted residential code once, read the roof assembly chapter, and note the amendments. One hour of reading converts "the code requires it" from a thing roofers say into a citation you can produce on demand — and produced citations get paid.

The invisible three will never impress a homeowner from the driveway. They'll just quietly determine whether the fascia rots, whether the first course peels off in the first windstorm, and whether the February ice dam ends up in the living room. Put them in the scope, back them with the code, and build them into the system — so the components nobody sees are never the money you don't get.
